Escape and Enjoy a Smoky Mountains Flexcation.jpg

Flexcations combine work with vacation. Work remotely from the privacy of a lovely Smoky Mountains cabin while you also have access to great activities every day and at night, too. Here are easy tips for planning a cabin flexcation.

Set up for successful telework.

Be sure to book a rental cabin with high speed internet access. You can work where you like in your private cabin, whether you’re next to the fireplace, curled up on the sofa, or outside on the deck.

If you want variety (and a taste of local color and coffee), grab your computer and head to anyplace with wi-fi access and a comfortable seat. The Anna Porter Public Library in Gatlinburg and the Pigeon Forge Public Library both provide free wi-fi. Coffee shops and cafes are great for remote work too. Just remember to find out if locations are limiting indoor seating due to social distancing requirements.

Remember to take vacation time.

Plan daily breaks from work for sightseeing or fresh mountain air. Visit Sugarlands Visitor Center in Great Smoky Mountains National Park to enjoy natural history exhibits and see a short film about this scenic treasure. Or work through the morning, then take a rejuvenating, short hike along a park trail. Some are as short as a third of a mile, just right for a workday walk.

At Ripley’s Aquarium of the Smokies, you can see exotic fish, sharks, penguins and more in about two hours. TheAlcatraz East Crime Museum at The Island in Pigeon Forge says to take two to three hours to visit its galleries of criminal profiles, victims’ stories, forensic science and more. If you’d love seeing iconic TV and film vehicles from “Batman,” “The Fast and the Furious,” and “The Avengers,” don’t miss the Hollywood Star Cars Museum, where a tour takes about an hour.

If you relax by browsing for unique, hand-crafted gifts, take a short drive along the Arts and Crafts Community loop, visiting local artisans’ workshops.

Plan for the kids to do virtual school.

With many kids, teens and college students learning online at home, there’s no reason not to bring the whole family on flexcation to the Smoky Mountains. List what they’ll need to bring so no one forgets a device, charger or school supplies.

Work out a schedule so the kids know that once their virtual school day is over, they’ll get the reward of fun like laser tag and mini-golf at LazerPort Fun Center, or haunted house shenanigans at Mysterious Mansion of Gatlinburg—two of many kid-friendly attractions open into the evening.

Let the Smokies relax and inspire you.

A cabin getaway will give you fresh perspective. With household chores and cares left at home, you’ll focus better on work at your cabin getaway spot. The beauties of the Smokies will inspire you during the work day, and distract you perfectly when work is done. Book a flexcation cabin today.
