Enjoy breathtaking views and a death-defying circus act at the grand opening of the new SkyTrail elevated walkway in Gatlinburg SkyLift Park, on Oct. 10 and 11.

The celebrations feature Rucksack Circus’s daring highline team, walking on a 150-foot line suspended over the valley. Highline performances are included in your SkyLift Park tickets.

The SkyTrail hugs the contours of Crockett Mountain, letting visitors walk at their own pace as they take in spectacular Smoky Mountains views. The trail curves around the valley to connect the two ends of the park’s famous SkyBridge—a 680-foot span over Crockett Mountain Gap. View this graceful, unique bridge as you walk along the new trail, then cross the bridge itself, or return along the trail.

Stroll the SkyTrail in both directions while enjoying two different experiences: The east side is a newly-built, elevated wooden boardwalk, while the west side is a paved walking path. Both sides give you far-reaching views.

During the opening weekend, gasp at the professional highline walkers moving through the air far above the valley, walking only on a two-inch-wide line. Learn about their artistry and athleticism from Rucksack Circus members who will narrate their walks and explain how these daredevils develop their amazing skills. Be sure to check the SkyPark website for highline performance times on Oct. 10 and 11.

You can try out highline walking for yourself, too, on a demonstration line at the SkyDeck.

You’ll want to come back to the SkyTrail throughout the year. During the fall, Gatlinburg SkyLift Park will keep adding to this attraction. Return to explore the planned rest areas along the trail, with interpretive signs telling you about the views, the SkyBridge and SkyLift, and the history of the 2016 wildfires that changed Gatlinburg and the Smokies.

The SkyTrail is just the most recent addition to Gatlinburg SkyLift Park, a local institution since 1954. The park boasted the first chairlift in the region. Today you can ride the modern, smooth SkyLift, built in 2017, to its destination atop Crockett Mountain for unforgettable photos.

The SkyBridge is the longest pedestrian suspension bridge in North America. It takes you over the valley and lets you view the world below through glass panels under your feet at the bridge’s center. Before you return to earth in Gatlinburg, pause to eat, shop and rest on the mountaintop at the SkyCenter’s snack bar and gift shop.
