Located in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Charlies Bunion offers stunning views of the mountains to the north of you, Mt. Kephart and the Jump Off to your west and Mount Guyot towards the east. The hike is approximately 5 miles round trip and is considered moderate in difficulty.

The trailhead for Charlies Bunion begins at the Newfound Gap Parking Area. From the parking area, the trail follows alongside the Appalachian Trail for 0.8 miles before veering off to the left. For the next mile, the trail steadily gains elevation as it winds its way through a hardwood forest.

At around 2 miles into the hike, you'll reach an open area with incredible views of the surrounding mountains. This is a great spot to take a break, have a snack, and enjoy the view before continuing on.

From here, the trail continues to climb for another half mile before leveling off as it approaches Charlies Bunion itself. Charlies Bunion is a large rock outcropping with 360-degree views of the mountains. It's named after Charles McDowell who was part of a group that cleared the land for what is now the Appalachian Trail.

After taking in the views from Charlies Bunion, return back down the trail the way you came.
