Rich Mountain Loop

The Rich Mountain Loop Hiking Trail is a great way to see Cades Cove from a walking viewpoint away from the traffic flow. This trail takes you through wooded forest areas, glimpses of wildlife, flowering plants, and historic landmark remnants. Along the hike, you will have views of Cades Cove, Townsend, and Tuckaleechee Cove. The trail is 8.5 miles long round trip with an elevation gain of 1736' and has a strenuous difficulty rating for hiking abilities and fitness level required.
The Rich Mountain Loop Hiking Trail is located in the Cades Cove Area off of the one-way loop with a parking lot 7.7 miles in for the trail. This trail is a great way to see back into Cades Cove from a walking viewpoint away from the traffic flow taking you through wooded forest areas, glimpses of wildlife, flowering plants, and historic landmark remnants. Along the hike, you will have views of Cades Cove, Townsend, and Tuckaleechee Cove.
The trailhead starts at an elevation of approximately 1800 feet and gradually climbs up to Rich Mountain summit at over 3000 feet. The first part of the trail takes you along an old roadbed that was used during settlement days in Cades Cove. You will see log buildings left from those early days as well as chimneys and rock walls built by early settlers.
The second part of the trail becomes steeper as it climbs up to the summit of Rich Mountain. At the top, there are several open areas with 360-degree views of the Smoky Mountains. On a clear day, you can see for miles in every direction! After enjoying the views from the top, the trail then descends back down to Cades Cove.
